FOOD LION SPEED STREET PRESENTED BY COCA-COLA RECYCLING EFFORTS BENEFIT LOCAL BURNED CHILDREN’S FUND

THE FESTIVAL COLLECTS MORE THAN SIX TONS OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

HARRISBURG, N.C. (July 11, 2013) – Food Lion Speed Street presented by Coca-Cola, a free, three-day consumer festival in Charlotte, N.C., partnered with Charlotte Fire to collect aluminum bottles and cans to benefit the Firefighter’s Burned Children’s Fund for the first time this year. More than 500 pounds of aluminum was collected and donated to the local fund which purchases non-medical items that are not covered by insurance for burned children, such as pediatric wheelchairs and exercise equipment.

In addition, the festival collected six tons of additional recyclable materials including cardboard, grease, and paper.

In an effort to minimize the event’s impact on the environment, recycling was introduced at Food Lion Speed Street presented by Coca-Cola in 2009 by event sponsor Food Lion and event producer JHE Production Group. Recycling containers were located throughout the uptown Charlotte footprint next to or near trash cans to encourage guests to recycle during the festival last May.

For the fifth consecutive year, Hands on Charlotte, a volunteer, non-profit organization, provided the manpower to fuel the on-site recycling efforts for Food Lion Speed Street presented by Coca-Cola.

Food Lion Speed Street presented by Coca-Cola delivers an unprecedented consumer experience to fans by means of live entertainment, access to racing’s brightest stars and interactive displays from sponsors including Food Lion, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet and many more. As a precursor to the Coca-Cola 600 held at Charlotte Motor Speedway and part of the 10 days of racing in May, the festival entertains more than 400,000 guests over the course of three days each year. The 20th anniversary of the event is set for May 22 to 24, 2014.
