THE GIRL SCOUTS HORNETS’ NEST COUNCIL WRAPS UP COOKIE SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 24, 2017) – As the Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council’s cookie season ends, there is a lot to celebrate for the local nonprofit that provides young female entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn essential business skills through the sale of a tasty treat.

The organization not only builds courage, confidence and character, but it also trains future leaders by equipping them with skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, business ethics and more.

One Girl Scout puts the time-honored tradition of selling cookies into perspective. “I love selling Girl Scout cookies but enjoy selling them for our troops the most because it makes them feel happy and appreciated to receive boxes of cookies,” said Maryn Holden from Troop 3704 in Mecklenburg County. “I am proud to be a Girl Scout because of all the special things my friends and I do for others.”


The nearly three-month cookie campaign in Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Stanly, Union and York Counties resulted in several notable achievements.

2017 Results

  • Six thousand seven hundred Girl Scouts participated in this year’s cookie program.
  • The female entrepreneurs’ collective efforts, along with support from troop leaders, family and friends, generated 1,060,630 packages of cookies sold.
  • Sales through the Hornets’ Nest Council’s digital cookie, the app and customized website, were up 47 percent from last year.
  • In its 100th year of Girl Scouts selling cookies, the Hornets’ Nest Council rolled out “Cookies for a Cause,” a cookie donation program that benefits military members, hometown heroes and local nonprofits. The program netted approximately 34,000 packages of cookies that benefit local organizations including A Child’s Place, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Habitat for Humanity of Mecklenburg County, Loaves and Fishes, Urban Ministry Center, USO of North Carolina and many more.
  • The S’mores cookie was introduced this season to the delight of thousands. The s’mores-inspired crunchy graham sandwich cookie with creamy chocolate and marshmallow filling generated 9.5 percent of the overall cookie volume. The inventory of S’mores was scooped up in approximately six weeks.
  • Funds generated from cookie season stay in the eight-county footprint, making a local impact on girl-led activities. From the funds earned, a troop will collectively decide how best to use the dollars which could include a visit to the Dale Earnhardt Environmental Leadership Campus at Oak Springs, civic activities, team-building days and more.
