Cell Phones For Soldiers and AT&T Give Back to Veterans at Union Gospel Mission

DALLAS (June 25, 2014) – Cell Phones For Soldiers, a national nonprofit focused on the communication needs of troops and veterans donated cellphones and one year of AT&T service to veterans staying at the Union Gospel Mission in Dallas.

Since 1949, the Union Gospel Mission has provided services to homeless veterans housing up to 40 at a time.

“The donated cellphones and service to Union Gospel Mission will assist veterans in locating full-time work,” said Robbie Bergquist, co-founder of Cell Phones For Soldiers. “Providing these lines of communication will allow homeless veterans a personal phone number for potential employers to reach them.”

“Our nation’s veterans have made sacrifices to protect our country and our freedoms, and as a company, we see it as an honor to support them,” said Bob Anderson, President, Dallas Veterans Employee Resource Group. “We are proud to be working with Cell Phones For Soldiers and the Union Gospel Mission to serve these amazing men and women who have served us so well.”

In addition to the needed communication tools, Cell Phones For Soldiers and longtime supporter AT&T provided more than 50 volunteers to tackle a variety of needs for the mission such as painting dormitory hallways, cleaning, small facility repairs, gardening and serving lunch to the residents.

“As we look for better and better ways to serve the veterans in our program, the ability for them to have cellphones is a major step forward,” said Bill Thompson, executive director of Union Gospel Mission. “Cell Phones For Soldiers has blessed us with this great donation. The fact that they have also scheduled a workday at the Union Gospel Mission gives our vets a chance to personally thank them. This is a classic win-win situation, and we are privileged to participate in this endeavor.”

Supporting Cell Phones For Soldiers since 2007, AT&T employed the AT&T Community Engagement program which provides opportunities for employees to use unique passions and abilities to improve their communities through community service and giving. Since 2007, AT&T and its customers have donated more than $4.5 million to support the Cell Phones For Soldiers organization.

For 10 years, Cell Phones For Soldiers has served as a lifeline for America’s bravest. Its Helping Heroes Home program provides one-time emergency needs to help veterans transition to post-combat life. From cellphones to use for job searches to computers for communication with family, these tools assist in the fight to improve the lives of veterans.
