MAY RACES IN WITH FREE, FUN ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHARLOTTEANS AND RACE FANS

HARRISBURG, N.C. (May 5, 2014) – From May 9 to May 24, the 600 Festival™ Association is offering fans a multitude of free activities to enjoy prior to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, including these top-10 things:

1. Live Musical Entertainment

Located in front of the NASCAR Hall of Fame between Brevard and Caldwell Streets, the Coca-Cola stage is home to musical entertainment for this year’s Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet.

2. Get Behind the Wheel of a New Car

Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet is proud to be home to the annual Chevy Ride-and-Drive. A partner since 1995, Carolina Chevy Dealers offer fans the opportunity to test drive several of the newest models, including Camaro, Impala, Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500 HD, Malibu, Cruze, Equinox and Tahoe. Test drives will be given on Tryon Street in front of the Harvey B. Gantt Center May 22-24 from 12-6 p.m.

3. A Birthday Celebration
The 600 Festival Association is kicking off the 20th annual Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet with a birthday party celebration. “Billy Joel,” the lead singer of The Strangers will lead the crowd in singing happy birthday. Afterward, sponsors, VIPs and fans alike will enjoy a slice of birthday cake in the festival’s honor. The celebration will kick off at 5 p.m. in front of the Coca-Cola stage at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

4. Movies Under the Stars
Join the 600 Festival™ Association under the stars in downtown Kannapolis Friday, May 9. The first-ever double feature, Movies on the Campus will include two racing-themed movies, Disney’s “Planes” at 8:30 p.m. and “Six Pack” at 10 p.m. Arrive early to reserve a spot on the grass and enjoy the other Village Jiggy Jam festivities.

5. A Southern Welcome for the NASCAR Teams
Fans can line the streets of historic downtown Concord May 15 at 6 p.m. as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team haulers parade down Union Street to load in for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. After the final hauler exits downtown, Union Street Live kicks off with live music from The Tams.

6. NASCAR Appearances Galore*
The 600 Festival™ Association offers unprecedented access to racing’s biggest stars throughout the month of May. NASCAR stars including Austin Dillon, Joey Logano, Greg Biffle, Donnie Allison and Jeremy Clements will be making appearances at Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet May 22-24 at the Coca-Cola stage, Creative Loafing display, GoPro Motorplex display, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest and more.

Additionally, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson, Michael McDowell, Justin Allgaier, Ryan Truex, Ross Chastain, Ryan Blaney, Darrell Wallace, Jr., Drew Herring, Timmy Hill, Scott Speed, Landon Cassill, Blake Koch, Kevin Swindell and more will compete in the Little 600 May 20.

7. Racing Up-Close and Personal
Drivers and their wives will take the wheel of GoPro Motorplex’s arrive-and-drive rental karts to compete in the Lady 600 and Little 600 May 20 at 5 p.m. The fan-friendly race format allows spectators an opportunity to watch several heat races that will set the starting grid for the final 15-lap event under the lights.

8. Fun for the Little Ones
The Kids’ Zone at Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet supplies an array of kid-friendly fun May 22-24 from 12-6 p.m., including bounce houses, a rock climbing wall and face painters. On Saturday, May 24, the Kids’ Zone will play host to Radio Disney LIVE! Win Lose or Draw Edition Fueled by DOLE Fruit Squish’ems featuring interactive entertainment, dancing, music and a free-to-the-public hosted Q&A and meet and greet with Austin North from Disney Channel’s “I Didn’t Do It.”

9. Hot Dog Eating Contest
Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet will play host to a Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest qualifying events Saturday, May 23 at 5:45 p.m. The top male and female finishers will earn a spot to compete in the ESPN-televised finals at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island July 4, a holiday tradition since 1916.

10. Dance with the Gecko
The GEICO “Savings on Board Bus” swings into town May 22 at Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet. For three days, fans will have the opportunity to sing and dance with the brand’s signature Gecko, enter to win a $500 gift card, take home small prizes and learn how they can save 15 percent or more on car insurance.

 

For 30 years, the 600 Festival Association has commemorated the May races at Charlotte Motor Speedway with spectacular family-oriented events. This year’s event lineup includes four free events: Movies on the Campus May 9 in Kannapolis, Haulers on Union May 15 in Concord, Little 600 May 15 in Mooresville and Coca-Cola Speed Street presented by Chevrolet May 22-24 in Uptown Charlotte.
